Darren Thompson - Dealmaker of the Year 2016

Back to news awards

Having had another prolific year of deal making, it was no wonder that Darren had once again been shortlisted as Dealmaker of the Year for 2016 by the Solent judging panel.

Darren completed eleven transactions as lead advisor and venture capital investor in the qualifying period involving banks, other venture capital firms, HNW’s and listed acquirers. He sits as an NED advisor for a number of Solent basedBoards and his deal-making skills are evident in both the cross-border and domestic transactions that he has undertaken as well as the early stage portfolio of investments that he manages, which are extremely ‘hands-on’.

He has been instrumental in building an investment portfolio of sixteen investments, eight of which are Solent based. In particular, the period has seen an amazing performance amongst the majority of the maturing portfolio of the early stage tech fund that he manages, including truly outstanding performances from portfolio companies Blis and LoveHolidays, where Darren sat on the Board from early stage/start up.

The dealmaker award is one that is voted for by the audience during the ceremony itself. Being such an instrumental part of the SolentRegion's successful deal activity and having built up such a great reputation and respect from all the professionals that Darren works with and beyond, hewas immensely honoured to be announced as the winner by his peers within the region.

When asked by the Business Magazine what he thought was Meridian’s winning recipe he commented “I think it’s a combination of being very experienced and practical about getting deals done in the most efficient way without scoring points, and whilst keeping the needs of your client foremost in your mind at all times. A lot of people in London give quality advice, but we also really care about the region and business environment we work in, and we work collegiately with other professional advisors in the area, which is key. If you buy into them, they buy into you and the result is a great deal for the client, and that’s what matters.

We are a small, dynamic team with a varied complementing skill set. This is how we have created the ‘go-to’ corporate finance house for the South Coast and beyond. It is a great place to work and the quality of advisors down here is just superb and that’s why great deals will always be done in theSouth.”

Darren has won this award four times since 2012, for someone who is not one to rest on his laurels, he is already making remarkable process for the next years qualifying period having already completed three more deals in the last four weeks since the Solent Deals Awards!
